In a letter to its members posted on its website on Wednesday, Feb. 3, TRUFA president Tom Friedman said it is “more than likely” that mediation may break down within the next 24 hours and has called on faculty to prepare for coming job action. The notice was later removed, however, and TRU released an update stating that meetings would continue on Feb. 4 and 5.
The faculty association had scheduled a special meeting for 7 p.m. on Wednesday, but all traces of the original notice were removed from the TRUFA site later Wednesday afternoon.
The now-removed warning of coming job action follows nearly three weeks of silence from the university and faculty association as the two agreed on a media blackout going into mediation.
Earlier this week, TRUFA president Tom Friedman updated TRUFA members that the two sides were still “significantly far apart on some key issues.”
The text of the original notice can be found below:
TRUFA has called a special general faculty meeting for tomorrow (Wednesday) to provide some further information about the mediation process and to prepare for the next stage in what has become a year-long effort to negotiate a new collective agreement.
As you will have seen from yesterday’s mediation update and the chart and documents I distributed, TRUFA and TRU management are still significantly far apart on some key issues that TRU faculty told TRUFA were of prime importance in this round of bargaining.
It’s quite possible—in fact, more than likely—that mediation may break down within the next 24 hours, and all faculty must be prepared for the next steps that I believe we must collectively take to persuade TRU’s senior administrators and their bargaining team to acknowledge and address our issues, and engage in give-and-take negotiating.
I realize that we had a general meeting as recently as January 14th; however, the stakes are higher now, and TRUFA wants to make sure that everyone is fully informed and prepared for what comes next. I urge you to make every effort to attend.
Here are the details of the meeting:
Wednesday, February 3rd 7 pm
Kamloops: Irving Barber Centre (HOL 190)
Williams Lake: ITV Room 1303
Thank you for your continuing support and I hope to see you tomorrow evening.
On behalf of the TRUFA Executive and the bargaining team,
