Kamloops RCMP arrested a 36-year-old man at 3:30 p.m. this afternoon following the overnight shooting of Cpl. Jean Rene Michaud. An update earlier in the day said he was in stable, but critical condition.
The officer was shot at around 2:45 a.m. at Batchelor Drive and North River Drive in the Batchelor Heights neighbourhood in Kamloops, prompting a large police response in the area, including a police helicopter which resulted in the temporary shutdown of the Kamloops Airport and roadblocks that backed up traffic.
At the press conference following the arrest, RCMP said that the investigation is ongoing and that another suspect in already in custody may be involved. The suspect arrested at 3:30 p.m. was known to police.
Because the suspect was injured in the incident, the Independent Investigations Office of B.C. (IIO) will take over the case.
