The TRU WolfPack men’s hockey team finished the regular season in first place overall in the British Columbia Intercollegiate Hockey League (BCIHL) standings with back-to-back wins in Victoria this weekend.
Lorne Cummings’ squad needed to win both matches against the Vikings to overtake Simon Fraser University for first place on the final weekend of regular season play. It came down to a comeback performance in the final match of the year.
After a dominant effort on Friday night that saw the ‘Pack take down the Vikings by a score of 7-3, the team opened their game on Saturday—spending too much time in the penalty box—and found themselves down 2-0.
Andrew Fisher and Cody Rose found the back of the net before the end of the frame, as the ‘Pack evened the score despite being out shot 14-7 in the first period.
TRU tightened up on defence after the first, allowing only six more shots in the rest of the game, all of which were set aside by goaltender Anthony Manfredi.
Joel Leonard’s goal at the 11:43 mark of the second period was enough to lift the team to the top of the standings as the ‘Pack held on for a 3-2 win.
“Our guys put together a gutsy performance to take two wins on the road,” said Cummings after the sweep to cap off the season.
“We were pretty banged up coming into this weekend and the guys gave it everything they had. Our leaders were our leaders at an important time. It’s good for the guys to take first place after the work they put in throughout the season.”
The first-place finish earns the team a first-round bye in the BCIHL Championship Tournament Mar. 23-27, hosted by Simon Fraser University.
